PONCE: Empatía con la Región y el Laboratorio de la Ciudad
Con una población de aproximadamente 200,000 habitantes, Ponce es la ciudad más grande del sur de Puerto Rico y la segunda ciudad más grande de la isla. Se le conoce como “La Perla del Sur” por su impacto y su influencia protagónica en la región. Como bastión económico y cultural del sur de Puerto Rico, Ponce ha tenido que adoptar un papel protagónico en el desarrollo de la región. En los últimos años, la prominencia de Ponce dentro de la región ha vuelto a generar un gran potencial para un mayor desarrollo. El advenimiento de la creación del Puerto de las Américas ha empoderado a Ponce y la región sur con un potencial más allá de lo típico. Capitalizar la apertura global que ofrece el Puerto de las Américas requiere una estrategia de acceso total a los principales actores de la Región Sur. Desde la perspectiva académica y de una Escuela de Arquitectura, esta estrategia debe impulsarse de manera innovadora, buscando establecer una praxis multisectorial, donde la Academia, la Industria, el Gobierno y la sociedad civil colaboren en su implementación, evaluación y calibración. La Pontificia Universidad Católica de Puerto Rico tiene como meta establecer un paradigma académico que permita llegar a la médula cultural para emprender la transformación social de la región, es decir, un paradigma que nos lleve del Puerto a la Red de Acceso Global.
La Escuela de Arquitectura y Diseño RHC adopta el concepto de Empatía Regional como eje ético de su propuesta académica, social, cultural y económica para la región sur de Puerto Rico. Afirmar la Empatía Regional será la vértebra del crecimiento económico para los mercados y redes globales que se desarrollarán a través del Puerto de Las Américas, uno de los proyectos más grandes de Puerto Rico, y un potencial catalizador para la economía, la cultura y el desarrollo regional. Fomentar la Empatía Regional asegurará la evolución saludable de nuestra cultura en un contexto de intercambio global. Cultura concebida como el organizador cívico y epistémico de la sociedad, como cantera de riqueza, cúmulo de experiencias y conocimientos.
El Centro Histórico de Ponce le ha proporcionado a la Escuela de Arquitectura y Diseño RHC un escenario ideal para la postulación de su visión y la base contextual para el avance de su innovador programa académico. El edificio Forteza, ubicado dentro de la plaza principal de Ponce (Plaza Las Delicias), brinda a los estudiantes y profesores una verdadera comprensión de la condición urbana que hace de Ponce un lugar único. La Escuela de Arquitectura y Diseño RHC está rodeada de edificios históricos y una miríada de estructuras gubernamentales, culturales, sociales, económicas y sociales que son capaces de proporcionar a nuestros estudiantes una riqueza de capacidad intelectual, profesional e intelectual. También exacerbará la capacidad de nuestro cuerpo docente para proporcionar información accesible y contextualizada dentro del contexto físico de la Escuela.
La Escuela de Arquitectura y Diseño RHC está concebida como un Laboratorio Urbano donde el estudio minucioso de la ciudad, el territorio, el ecosistema es parte de la agenda académica y de investigación. El conocimiento pragmático de la ciudad y la región como un ecosistema en el que se entrelazan complejidades económicas, socioculturales y políticas es esencial para obtener los datos y la inteligencia necesarios para evaluar el esfuerzo y competir. Es un conocimiento ecosistémico de todos los componentes del territorio, naturales, infraestructurales, legales, sociales, políticos y económicos; en resumen, un conocimiento pragmático. El conocimiento pragmático de la ciudad y de la región tiene que darse en un nuevo escenario académico. Es necesario un Laboratorio Urbano que derive nuevas metodologías, nuevas tecnologías, nuevos modelos y visiones para desarrollar la Región Sur, para provocar los cambios pertinentes y la mentalidad ortodoxa que domina el Estado y la Academia tradicional. Al entrar a competir globalmente, es necesario inculcar en el territorio nuevas características, actitudes y modelos de operar local e internacionalmente.
PONCE: Regional Empathy and the City Laboratory
With a population of approximately 200,000, Ponce is the largest city in southern Puerto Rico, and second largest city in the island. It is known as “La Perla del Sur” (pearl of the south) due to it’s impact and its protagonical influence on the region. As the economic and cultural bastion of southern Puerto Rico, Ponce has had to adopt a leading role in the regions development. In recent years, Ponce’s prominence within the region has once again brought forth great potential for further development. The advent of the creation of the Port of the Americas has empowered Ponce and the southern region with potential beyond the typical. Capitalizing on the global aperture that offers the Port of The Americas requires an all access strategy to the principal players of the Southern Region. From the academic perspective and of a School of Architecture, this strategy shall be propelled in an innovative way, looking to establish multisectorial praxis, where the Academy, the Industry, the Government and civilian society shall collaborate in its implementation, evaluation and calibration. Pontifical Catholic Universityof Puerto Rico has as its goal to establish an academic paradigm that allows reaching the cultural pith undertaking the social transformation of the region, in other words, a paradigm that will take us from the Port to the Network of Global Access.
The RHC School of Architecture and Design adopts the concept of Regional Empathy as the ethical backbone of its academic, social, cultural and economic proposal for the southern region of Puerto Rico. Asserting Regional Empathy will be the vertebrae of economic growth for global markets and networks that will be developed through the Port of The Americas, one of the biggest projects within Puerto Rico, and a potential catalyst for economy, culture and regional development. Encouraging Regional Empathy will assure the healthy evolution of our culture in a global exchange context. Culture conceived as the civic and epistemic organizer of the society, like the quarry of wealth, heap of experiences and knowledge.
The Ponce Historical Center has provided the RHC School of Architecture and Design with an ideal venue for the postulation of its vision and the contextual basis for the advancement of its innovative academic program. The Forteza building, located within Ponce’s main plaza (Plaza Las Delicias), provides students and faculty with a true grasp of the urban condition that makes Ponce aunique place. The RHC School of Architecture and Design is bound by historical buildings and a myriad of governmental, cultural, social, economic and social structures that are capable of providing our students with a wealth of intellectual, professional, and intellectual capability. It will also exhacerbate our faculty’s ability to provide accesible and contextual information within the School’s physical context.
The RHC School of Architecture and Design is conceived as an Urban Laboratory where the meticulous study of the city, the territory, the ecosystem is part of the academic and research agenda. The pragmatic knowledge of the city and the region as an ecosystem in which economic, socio-cultural and political complexities are intertwined is essential in order to obtain the data and intelligence necessary to evaluate the effort and compete. It is an eco-systemic knowledge of all the components of the territory, natural, infrastructural, legal, social, politic and economic; in short, a pragmatic knowledge.
The pragmatic knowledge of the city and the region has to occur in a new academic stage. An Urban Laboratory that derives new methodologies, new technologies, new models and visions to develop the Southern Region is necessary to provoke the pertinent changes and orthodox mentality that dominates the State and the traditional Academy. In going into competing globally, it is necessary to instill in the territory new characteristics, attitudes and models of operating locally and internationally.
